"Hills like White Elephants"-inspired Prose.

She keeps ensuring him that she is alright. The worst part of it is the powerlessness. He knows that he is supposed to be the strong one, the protector; hell, her protector. But seeing her in that state, makes him realise that he had failed in that simple, yet very important task. She is sulking at night and fighting to hold back the tears at day. He asks her again but she keeps ensuring him that she is alright. Despite their physical closeness, he has never felt so far away from her, and the sudden emptiness in her eyes leaves him with the hollow notion of helplessness. Had she known how the small procedure would affect her, she might have reconsidered her choice. Sometimes he wishes she had, just so he could see her beautiful smile again; the same smile that he fell for so long ago. It should be gone by now, but the outbreaks of tears continue to ravage him as he begs for understanding. Their plans for the future include marriage and children but those plans seem all blurred by now. He feels he is the one to blame for all this, but she keeps ensuring him that she is alright.

  1. Interesting to see things from the man's point of view. I did actually intend for students to change the original genre from short story to something else, so that aspect is missing here...
