The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed Is Death

The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. Yesterday,

Young minds were corrupted. And to-morrow morning,

Defending the flag with pride to a deceitful cause. But to-day,

To-day the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. Terrorism

Penetrates and saturates society like acid,

And today the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

This is the fear of nuclear weapons. And this

Is the misery that comes, when the arguments of going into war is questioned,

When the situation is worsened. And this is the image of the enemy

Which in some cases are somewhat distorted. The truth

Remains absent in transparent, yet eloquent cover-ups,

Which we in our case experience a lot.

This is their safety-catch, which is always released

When a mistake has been made. And hopefully no one will

Know that mistakes have been made. You can fairly quickly be

Mislead by the strength of their arguments. The smokescreens

Are fragile yet very convincing, the trick is to never let anyone see

Any of the misleading images.

And warfare is seen as a necessity. The purpose of this

Is not evident, as there seem to be no end. We cannot justify it

Rapidly war becomes a never-ending spiral. We call this

A vicious circle. And rapidly backwards and forwards:

Progress never seems to come there are only more losses:

They call it a vicious circle.

They call it war for a cause: it is perfectly easy

If you believe in the cause: like the day

And the night, there is no ending, and the point of no return

Which in our case we have long exceeded; and faces of strangers

Corrodes their treacherous mind and haunting them day and night,

For the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

  1. Quite impassioned denouncement of war and truth as its first casualty. Effective use of language in a coherent style quite different form Reed's...
