Naming an Enemy

Writing game 6:

Today they target Muslims. Yesterday,

the Commies and Jews. And tomorrow morning,
they will find a new enemy. But today,
today they target Muslims. The lilies
sway their heads hither and thither – they go with the flow,
and today they target Muslims.

This is an enemy country. And this

leader must be removed, we will all agree,
when we are given the facts. And this is the
information
which in our case we will not get. The branches
hold in the gardens their silent, stately gestures,
which in our case we will not get.

This is a suicide-bomber, ready to be released

with an easy flick of the thumb. But please do not suggest
that they are but all the same. Feeding the fear is quite easy
if we close our minds and eyes. The roses
are fragrant but thorny, never letting anyone see
they are not all the same.

And this emotion is fear. The purpose of this

is to keep us controlled, you should know. They scare us
with enemy pictures and stories: they call this
stating the facts. Backwards and forwards
the early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers:
They call this stating the facts.

They call it the war of terror. It is perfectly simple

if you are willing to believe: in your fear,
and the foe, and the suicide-bomber, and the
information,
which in our case we have not got; and the roses
silent and thorny, and the bees going backwards and forwards,
for today they target Muslims.

  1. Another very chilling poem where even the lyrical second voice gets embittered towards the end. Good work thematizing the propaganda and cover-up aspects of modern warfare.
