Writing Game: Author Function

The following is a complaint letter to The New York Times written by a billionaire CEO of a large multinational corporation:

Freedom

Society’s mindless oppression is always felt the most by people like me. Never am I allowed to be free, to pursue happiness, to be independent. Always must I be stifled, used and kicked. Democracy is supposed to be this great liberator of people, but ‘freedom’, ‘wisdom’ or ‘fairness’ are not words that come to mind when I think of my country’s governance, whereas I find ‘Kafkaesque’ and ‘coercive’ to be rather more descriptively accurate in detailing my government’s treatment of its citizens. I try to break free of the chains constraining me, I have the wherewithal to do so, but my attempts are halted at every turn by the greed, corruption and apathy so prevalent in the political and financial system today. The work I do and the products I produce are mercilessly exploited by people with disproportionate power and I’m left with no desire to any longer make a real effort to do my part for society. If everything is taken from me, then why should try to do more? When will justice be done? As long as our government continues on its present course, I fear the day will never come when people are given their due and fairly rewarded for their hard work.

Speculation:

The wording could have been exactly the same but the effect entirely different had I chosen as author a long time minimum wage worker at one of the above CEO's factories.

  1. Good work on catching the tone of whining and moaning. I agree with your speculation. I am, however, not entirely sure which author function you picked??
