Reflections on hypertexts

Hypertexts are a brilliant way of catching your attention. Just the web-page with some girls laughing, irritating as the sound was, got me curious since there is a story behind every new link. It might not lead to something utterly spectacular but it gets your imagination going. A perfect example of this was Bent's own take on hypertexts in which every word was a hyperlink, linking to a phrase at some point. I think that we had hoped for some wild thing to happen, and it did not. But that is the point of hypertexts, I think. You never know where they will take you.

The hypertext open source which is a piece of text edited by everyone in the world in real time, was another great hypertext. At first sight I thought that Bent was doing some kind of magic to make the words change. But after I learned that the text is actually edited by everyone, I stopped looking for any form of logical coherence and I just looked up on the screen to see how different people use their respective languages. In a way, it's the perfect window into just how globalization works.

  1. Pity, since "Wild Thing" is really my middle name... But I'm glad that the effort was appreciated, and even gladder that other student hypertexts were so much wilder and better than mine!

I like your point about the opening.sources text being a global hypertext. I hadn't quite thought of it in those terms, but you are obviously right...
