Hypertexts
I have never tried hypertexts before; however, I found hypertext to be very puzzling because the reading is not straight forward to what we are meant to read. Besides getting informed and learning about a specific text, or even enjoying the reading, I found myself to be annoyed by the constantly changes of the texts. It can be useful and interesting for some audience but I personally have difficulties knowing where I was at in the reading, because hypertext generated a cerebral overload.
The users may tend to lose the origin of the readings and end up giving up on it. It was very difficult for me to stay focused on what I was looking for, tons of ideas came to my mind while playing around with hypertexts and this caused me losing the main idea…
Your reaction is typical for first time users of the medium of hypertext. I notice that you mention getting 'tons of ideas' in passing when interacting with a hypertext, and perhaps the 'art' of reading them is to hang on to some of those new ideas and pursue and develop them...
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! I felt a very similar feeling when I experimented hypertexts...but at the same time it is a different option which can be a motivation for people who do not usually read a book... They can choose what to read...
